Williamsburg Restaurants

No visit to Colonial Williamsburg is complete without sampling its culinary delights: from "contemporary" gourmet experience to unusual dishes drawn from the traditions of tradesman's taverns in the 18th century. Each tavern features its own menu and specialties. Wash it down with regional brews or some excellent 20-21st century wines. The servers are especially knowledgeable about the dishes they serve and also the histories of each tavern - it's all part of the presentation. You'll even be entertained by costumed musicians, and possibly meet the tavern's proprietor!

King's Arms Tavern
Now serving Sally Lunn Bread, Game Pie, and Virginia's upper crust, this genteel colonial tavern catered to Virginia's gentry and the politically influential before, during, and after the Revolution, and was known as the restaurant where the elite meet and eat. The atmosphere of the tavern is one of simple elegance as befitting statesmen and gentry who often dined there. When Mrs. Vobe moved her business opposite the Raleigh Tavern in early 1772, she adopted the name "King's Arms" signaling her intention to accommodate gentlemen customers in the tradition of the leading public houses in England. Start with Peanut Soup (a tavern specialty) and for the main course, choose between Filet Mignon (served with bacon-wrapped bay oysters), Game Pie or Seared Pumpkin-Crusted Salmon.
